“Futuristic Funk” trio Muscle Tough, bred in the vibrant jam and electronic scene of Philadelphia, have been making some cool accolades this year with their brand of individualistic and unpredictable instrumental music.
Most recently, the trio recently performed a superjam set with DJ Logic and The Horn Section (formerly of Turkuaz) at Pennsylvania music festival Karnival Of The Arts. Previous to that this summer they had the unique honor of “opening” for Phish, performing a set before the Vermont jam legends in Bethel Woods, NY.
Just a few weeks ago, Muscle Tough released their first ever music video, a nifty visual ditty that combines silly with the serious atop a perfectly catchy music track.
Titled “Salvador Dolly Pardon Attorney,” the new music video perfectly encompasses the band’s unmissable talent for blending the totally irreverent with the straight up groovy. Rocking suits and cigarettes in a cool noir setting, the trio’s danceable beats gets a power chord-riding surge as the visuals take a turn for the delightfully whacky.
Clocking in at two minutes, “Salvador Dolly” carries on not just the band’s knack for clever wordplay but also their style for creating ultra-tight, ultra-quick compositions—a style they mastered during the pandemic time with the release of their compilation “Tough Transmissions Vol.1.”
In the live setting, it’s a bit of a different story with Muscle Tough, who with their instrumental prowess are adept at stretching their catalogue of unhinged, jazztronica pieces into more expansive, improvisational spaces. In just a few weeks, the band will be giving more opportunities to catch the live show with their “Down 2 Clown Tour.”
The tour kicks off on October 20 with a show in Nashville, Tennessee’s The 5 Spot, where the trio will be linking up with a New Orleans star-studded tribute to The Meters. After two more shows in Charleston and Atlanta, the tour will pick back up in early November with a performance at Ardmore Music Hall opening for Dopapod. From there, the band will hit Burlington, Troy NY, Everett MA, and Bridgeport CT.
